A COLOURED MAN IN TROUBLE

Auckland, Jan’. 20,

William Scarbroa {iJl), a coloured man, was charged at the Police Court to-day that on Thursday last week lie broke and entered the house of Edward William by day with intent to commit a [prime.. Evidence was given to the effect that on the date in question, Mrs Williams, who lives in Cook Street, was in the house alone,- and had a bath. On returning to her bedroom from the bathroom her attention was attracted by an unusual: smell, and she started to look ai out the room. In the course of her'search sho lifted th 3 bed quilt, and saw accused lying under her bod. She screamed for help and ran out of the house. One of the neighbours came along and went into the bouse with her, but could find nobody, though the back door of the bouse, which had been closed, was found standing open. Another neighbour saw accused go ou Mrs Williams’ premises about the time mentioned by Mrs Williams, and was sufficiently interested in his action to watch him. After going along the side of the house, accused returned to the front, s-sid tho witness, and then went on the verandah, opened the front door without knocking, and went inside. Later Plain-clothes Constable McHugh interviewed Scarboa at a house in Baker Street, when the latter made a statement to the effect that he had gone to the house to see Williams, as they had been workmates for a time. Getting no reply to his knock, ho walked in and looked in the kitchen. He thought ’Williams might be lying down, so he went into tho bedroom, and just then bo heard Mrs Williams along the Thinking that Mrs Williams might be alarmed at finding him in the room, lie bur under the bed in tho hope tint ho might get out without being seen. Ho said he had never ' been to Williams’ house before.

Accused, |who pleaded not guilty, wqs remanded to the Supreme Court for trial.
