CAPTURED GERMAN COLONIES.
WILL THEY BE RETURNED ?
ALARM IN AUSTRALIA.
United Press Association—By Eleo trict Telegraph—Copyright. . Received Jan. 25, 10. a.m. Sydney, Jan. 25. The destiny of the captured Gorman colonies is occupying attention.. The Lieut. Governor, in a speech referring to the danger of jthe future Qf New Guinea being judged in the light of insufficient knowledge, said one circumstance to which sufficient attention had never hcon drawn wa» that Australia was the one country in the world threatened with the curse of a laud frontier with such ft nation as Germany under sucli circumstances as might be avoided. New Guinea had been left with divided authority. Quite apart from the dangers arising from submarine ports on the coasts of Now Guinea, there is this eternal rankling sore in front of us, of a land that can at any moment raise a quarrel about mines, oilfields or anything else. The idea of self-determination in such a case, where occupants like the Germans are using every moment to secure their awn prestige with the people, is one that no Australian could contemplate with equanimity for a single moment. Melbourne, Jan. 25. The Senate resolutions regarding the after-war destiny of captured German colonics demand representation of Australian interests.
