The refrigerated steamer was not escorted. Mr Houston then asked whether, ■seeing the largo number of steamers •which were sunk at this spot, the Admiralty would niter the instruc■tions whereby shipmasters fell right into the submarine tr p, Mr Houston also elicited the fact ■that two steamers going from Liverpool to Waterford were lost with all 'hands on the loth and !7th of De- i ■eember. Parts of the ho ts were ■washed up. Mr M. Hogge asked whether a ■large number of children were lost. Mr Macnamara: ‘T cannot say!” Mr Houston asked whether a vessel was sunk at the mouth of the Mersey with the loss of -13 lives, of which 10 were pilots.

Mr Macnamara said: vessel was mined and two wore saved out of 13 aboard. ’ ’
