Houston, West Toxteth, asked several questions reg rding sub..mariuings. Mr Macnamara, First Lord of the Admiralty, admitted fch ; t a refrigerating steamer was lost on the 20th .lannary at the same place "ml the same hour sa a’steamer which was torpedoed on Christmas Day. The refrigerated steamer was not escorted. Mr Houston then asked whether, ■seeing the largo number of steamers •which were sunk at this spot, the Admiralty would niter the instruc■tions whereby shipmasters fell right into the submarine tr p, Mr Houston also elicited the fact ■that two steamers going from Liverpool to Waterford were lost with all 'hands on the loth and !7th of De- i ■eember. Parts of the ho ts were ■washed up. Mr M. Hogge asked whether a ■large number of children were lost. Mr Macnamara: ‘T cannot say!” Mr Houston asked whether a vessel was sunk at the mouth of the Mersey with the loss of -13 lives, of which 10 were pilots.
Mr Macnamara said: vessel was mined and two wore saved out of 13 aboard. ’ ’
