THE NOTTINGHAM LABOUR CONFERENCE.
IHE PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS. SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE BRITON. i GERMANY MUST EVACUATE I TERRITORY. THEN THEY WILL TALK. Reuter. London, Jan, 23. Mr Purdy, in his Presidential address to the Labour Conference at Nottingham, said-. “Peace by negotiation while Germany occupies foreign territories will moan’a German victory. If Germany does not accept President Wilson’s and Mr Llojnl George’s terms, wo must light on, and Germany can then no longer claim to be lighting a defensive war. There is not yet any sign that the enemy is willing to accept Mr Lloyd George’s, President Wilson’s or Labour principles. Will the German democracy dehue their war aims and face their Government as we have faced our Government? The way is now open to Germany, if tho German people and their Government sincerely desire a just peace. ”
Pie concluded: “A peace ment under present ,conditions will mean tho fastening of militarism more strongly on the people of Germany. on the peoples of the British Empire, and of tho world. We must have a clean peace, if it is only obtainable by lighting to the end. ” Mr E. Huysmans, secretary of tho International Socialist Bureau, said that if the moderate and democratic war aims of tho Labour Party were presented to an International Labour Conference, the Austro-German Labour Parties would bo compelled to declare their war aims, and if u general agreement transpired, lighting would bo paraHsed.
