SAD BATHING FATALITY.
TWO GIRLS DROWNED AT WANGANUI. ; , jr Per Press Association. Wanganui, Jan. 23. While bathing in the Wanganui River near Cadleclift this afternoon, two girls, Phyllis Walker, sixteen years of age, and Ida Bekkcr ton yc.rs wore drowned. Phyllis Walker, who coaid not swim, got out of her depth and Ida Bekkcr who could swim a little tried to save her, but Loth sank together. Three young girl enmpniions could not render any assistance and ran away screaming for help. A number of men who were working in the locality.went to the scene, but the spot where the girls disappeared could not bo definitely located. Drugging operations wore carried on for about an hour, when both todies were tecovered from a deep hole where there is over ton feet of water. Artificial respiration was tried unsuccessfully. Ida Bekkcr was an only child.
