The Rev. Knowles Smith, speaking at the meeting of the Protestant Political Association last evening, stated that he had come across two or three queer things lately. First, a number of men had sat some ' time ago for examination for a post in a certain Government department. Twenty men were wanted, and it was a very queer thing that one of those who sat the first twenty who got the appointments were all Roman Catholics. Apparently not one Protetstant who sat had brains enough to be successful (Laughter.) Again a number of men were examined by a medical board, and half a dozeuof them were classed as C2. Strangely enough, every one of the half do?en was a Catholic; all the others were passed fit, though one of them had been turned down five times. Again, should a Protestant minister make “a mistake,” and glaring Leadlines and a whole ptge were devoted to the csso; but three inches only -were given to the conviction in the City Police Court of a clergyman of another denomination. The Rev. Howard Eliott s?.id something, and he got the headlines and a pige or so of space, but the other person (a Roman Catholic priest) committed a grossly immoral act in the streets of the city, and he only got three inches of space. He wanted to know why that distinction Wb'S made; and he held that it was time they organised to inquire into these queer tilings and put a stop to them. (Applause.)—N. Z. Times. COSTS BUT A TRIFLE. ■While it is often impossible to prevent an accident, it is never impossible to be prepared—it is not beyond anyone’s purse. Buy a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain Balm and you are prepared for sprains, braises and like injuries.—Sold vorv whore.
