TAIHAPE NOTES.

From Our Own Correspondent

Lambs have already made their appearance on many farms adjacent to Talbape. At a meeting of the Taibatae branch of the Farmers’ Union, held on Wednesday, a long discussion ensued over the alleged shearing agreement recently arrived at be tween farmers and shearers of the district* Farmers who were present at the conference between sheep owners and shearers said that it was absurd to snageat that they conld sign any agreement involving sheep farmers who were not resent. It was understood by those present that the “conference’' was merely a oonver sation (between a few farmers and shearers who happened to be in town. Mr J. Hopwood Smith ex pressed the opinion that the Farm ers’ Union need not trouble about what had been done. Farmers had not been advised of any conference, therefore they had nothing to do with any agreement made by irresponsible people. Farmers had no knowledge of the meeting and did not recognise it in any shape or form and a resolution to this effect was unanimously adopted. A letter was received at Wednesday’s meeting of the Farmers’ Union, from the Provincial Secretary, inviting farmers to take part in a wheat growing competition. The general opinion was that such a proposition was unfavourable to this district owing to the scarcity of fiat country suitable for wheat growing. Mr D. Scott moved that the letter be brongfat under the notice of all members who could grow wheat, bnt this meeting is of opinion that most good oan be accomplished by farmers putting in larger areas of root crops to enable them to cope with the stock carrying that may be forced upon them ny the shortage of ships and because land is much more suitable for roots than wheat. This resolution was seconded by Mr J. Gilchrist and carried.
