EARLY CLOSING OF HOTELS.

(Per Press Association.) /Dnnedin, May 18.

The Mayor has received the following reply from Sir James Alien regarding six o’clock closing of hotels: “The Government have no power, by war regulation or otherwise, to deal with six o’clock closing. An amendment of the Jaw will be necessary to deal with the matter, The Government have no power to submit the matter to a referendum without the direction of Parliament. Parliament will do called together at the usual time next month. It is considered necessary that the Prime Minister and Sir Joseph Ward should be present in the Cabinet when the early closing question is discussed. The matter will be brought before the Prime Minister and Sir Joseph Ward immediately on their return. ” '
