MANGAWEKA NOTES.

From Oar Own Correspondent. The action of the Railway Department in ceasing to stop the Main Trunk Express trains at Mangaweka, is proving a very serinna inconvenience to townspeople and settlers in the whole district as far back as Rangiwahia, and there ia no doubt a serious injustice has been imposed on all concerned, Wholehearted efforts are being made to have the restriction removed, but so far without impressing the powers that be. Strom t i action would appear to be necessary.

Constable Esson, who has been in very indifferent health for some months past, has been ordered a month’s sick leave, and left with Mrs Esson for Napier on Saturday. It is to be hoped the farloagh will see him restored to his normal self.

It is anticipated that the Taihapa Dairy Company’s cream car will cease collecting from local suppliers at the end of this month or early in June, The present season has been a very good one for dairy farmers, who have received excellent cheques despite the batter tax. Large mobs of young stock, splendid stuff, too, still continue to pass through here en route to southern freezing works. ' Several men from this district arrived home from the front by the last trip of the hospital ship a local townsman being Private. Liddicoat, who, it is understood, has been discharged as permanently unlit. Kawhatau is shortly to see the erection of a new Anglican Church in its’ locality. The innnovatiou shows a decided step forward, and when an accomplished fact, a will aid very materially to cheer and lighten the labours of the incoming Parish Vicar of Mangaweka. Captain Connolly , Catholic Chaplain on the hospital ship, paid a flying visit to hia old parishioners in this district during the week. Captain Connolly looks very fit, and in reply to a question as to how he liked watching for submarines, said it was “not bad sport, bnt made him seasick !”
