APPLES FOR EXPORT.

IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING

QUALITY

EXCELLENCE OF NORTHERN PRODUCT.

Local markets will in time be quite inadequate to consume our huge supplies of fruit, and any district only producing fruit needing quick consumption will ba far in tba rear as an apple producing centre. Mr J. S. Moore, probably the largest buyer of apples lor South America, spoke thus about Port Albert apples:— “The best apples my firm have handled so far from New Zealand are Port Albert Doughertys. They carry well and open up in splendid condition.”

The Kaipara District,tPort Albert, is probably the only district in the North which has absolutely proven its ability to grow good export fruit. The Komiti Estate is in the centre of that district. Mr G. A. Green, the well known Auckland fruit expert and nurseryman, states that nowhere in New Zealand can the following highly approved exportjvarieties grown to greater perfection that, in Kaipara—Delicious, Munroe’s (now 'Dunn’s) Favourites, Daugherty, Scarlet Permain, Jonathan, Sturmer.

Such a list is abundant evidence, but the real heart of the matter is that fruit has been, and is being most successfully exported from the districts under discussion. We think it can safely be left to the overseas apple buyers to know what is good export fruit. You should read the book, issued by the Komiti Fruit Lands Development, Ltd., obtaiuab e free from the secretary, Box 603, Wellington. Read the article on “Carriage of Apples. Shipping Facilities in tho North,” to appear shortly in this 3onrnal. For the convenience of local r;sidents a supply of the boobs has been obtained by the Ratliff Laud Agency. Feilding, who will be pleased to post a copy to anyone interested.
