A Press message announces the death of Charles Tringhaxn, aged 74, formerly well known as an architect in W ellington. A reminder is given of the sendoff to be given to-night to SergtMajor Bertram by the Marton Defence Rifle Club.

The Very Rev. Dean Holley, of Wanganui, has been appointed Provincial of the Society of Mary in the place of Dean Smythe, who died last September. Tbe four-year-old son of the'Rev Lawrence Thomson, of Solway College, Masterton, was drowned in a swimming bath in tbe College grounds yesterday.

The order of services to be held at S. Stephen’s Church, Marton,@ next Sunday, in accordance with the desire expressed by His Majesty the King, are announced in this issue. At rhe Napier Mardi Gras on Boxing Day, Napier Band won the quickstep competition with 85 points, Marton Citizens Band being second witb 84 points and Dannevirke third with 80 points. Messages from the King were read to all troops yesterday in camps, barracks hospitals, and published in orders. One was to the troops generally and the other to the sick and wounded.

At a meeting of the Wanganui Presbytery, held at Marton Junction yesterday, a call from St. Andrew’s Church, Wanganui, to the Rev. David Campbell, of Riversdale, was sustained.

A drowning accident occurred during the afternoon of Christmas day on Fitzroy beach, New Plymouth. Thomas Salter, when bathing with a companion, was carried out to sea by a strong underflow. The body was recovered this morning. Deceased was 46, and married. Deceased was an old and respected resident of Mew Plymouth. The Governor has cabled to the Secretary of State for the Colonies as follows: —“I desire to associate myself with my Acting-Prime Minister in sending the following message to the Imperial Prime Minister:—‘New Zealand congratulates you on taking up the most responsible position of Prime Minister. We thank you for your inspiring message and I can assure you that the people of New Zealand are very grateful for the recognition of their contribution to the common cause and will stand firm in their determination to continue their efforts till final victory is won.’ ”

The New Zealand Presbyterian Bible Glass Thirteenth Summer Conference opened yesterday at Oamaru. Rev. J. Lawson Robinson, chairman of the local arrangements committee, presided and gave an inspiring address of welcome to the delegates. Addresses of welcome were given by Archdeacon Russell (President of the Ministers’ Association), the Mayor, the Moderator of the Assembly (Rev. R. Ryburn), and Rev. W. S. Todd. Greetings from members with the Expeditionary Forces were warmly anplauded. The delegates total over 700. The conference ‘will extend till next Tuesday.
