WANGANUI HOSPITAL BOARD.

Wanganui Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met yesterday. Present; Mr T, H. Battle (chair), Mesdames Comyn and Siddells, Messrs ;Sberman. Goldfinch, W. G. Bassett, Russell, McGregor, Lethbridge, Fletcher, Smith, Svenaon, Hine, and Bennett.

Mr Bassett moved that a previous resolution refusing conversion of the lease of part of the property held by Mrs Mcßeth be rescinded. The chairman explained that by the former resolution the Board refused the conversion of the part of the section under diesussinn unless the whole of that property be made subject to the same conditions. After a long discussion the motion was lost on a show of hands. Bank balances show:—General Account, dr. £BIOB 13s lOd; Imprest Account,cr. £4B 10s lid. Government Grant due this month £2615. Unpaid levies from local bodies, £4OOO. From March 31st, 1‘.)!6, up to date the capital expenditure has been £1571 4s. The estimates for the items on which money has been spent totalled £1055. At this rate the deficit at the end of the financial year (excluding the cost of tlie Infectious Diseases Ward at Taihape) is estimated to be about £BOO. There are also itefus totalling £8530n the estimates which have not yet been touched.

The monthly report of the medical snperintendant, the matrons at Wanganui and Taihape, and Health Inspectors Swindells and Pargeter were received and adopted. Miss E. Nicholas, Ashnurton, applied to be entered on the waiting list of probationers —Granted. A prolonged discussion was caused bj’ a report from the matron to the effect that occasionally young women who were quite unsuitable as nurses had to be taken on trial at the hospital, 1 and suggesting that the Board take steps to prevent this inconvenience both to the staff and the girls in question, by ensuring that before admittance probationers bo submtted to an adequate examination. After considerable discussion, in which every point of view was considered, the chairman moved that, on the appointment of a probationer the next on the list be notified to present herself at the hospital to be interviewed by the matron. —Carried.
