AUSTRIAN CARSO DEFENCES.

FIRST LINE CARRIED. ITALIANS ASSAULTING THE SECOND. Rome, Oct. 13. Semi-Official: The Austrians considered their first line positions on the Carso the strongest. They extended only seven miles, nullifying the numerical superiority of the Italians. Their straightness also entailed an attack on the whole extension.

When the Italian offensive captured important points of this line, the Austrians feverishly began to prepare their second line, which was then only laid out. The Italians are now attacking this.
