MR HUGHES’ VISIT TO ENGLAND.
THE EMPIRE SUGAR SCHEME. FAVOURS EVERYTHING NECESSARY TO SAVE COUNTRY. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Aug. 7, 10; 15 a. in. Adelaide, Aug. 7. Speaking at a reception Mr Hughes made a most significant reference to conscription. Since his return, he said, he would have them believe that whatever he thought was necessary would be done to save the country and he would not hesitate to put it before thejpeople. Referring to the Empire sugar scheme, he said the object was the production within the Empire of sugar required for the Empire. Preference would he given to sugar produced in the Empire or by countries, of the Allies, and the exclusion of enemy sugar for a period of not less than five years after the war. Perth, Aug. 7. At a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the President said that as a result of his visit to England Mr Hughes would declare in favour of conscription. All opposition would melt away when the information that Mr Hughes possessed was placed before all par ties.
