VICTORIA CROSS HEROES.
DEEDS OF COURAGE AND DARING. -Received August 7, 1 p.m. Loudon, August C. Victoria Crosses have been awarded to Lieut. Battenpool (Monsters), who directed the raiders with unflinching courage. His hand was mutilated by bombs but he cheered his men until he received two other wounds, and then fainted. Captain Green (Medical Corps) who rescued an officer caught in the entanglements, and dressed his wounds in a shell hole despite bombs. In attempting to bring in tbe officer he himself was killed. Lieut. Jonesjj(Lancashires). ‘When the brigade isolated hisjjplatoon, he himself shot fifteen Germans. When the ammunition was spent he seized a bomb, but was shot through the head while throwing it. His bravery so encouraged his men that they threw stones and ammunition boxes until the nine survivors were compelled to retire. Major Rees, aviator, rose as an escort to ten supposed British aeroplanes homewards. He discovered that they were Germans. Rees forced one to descend and dispersed five, seriously damaging two.' He continued the fight at close range, although wounded in the thigh, until his ammunition was spent. He returned safely. A MINE-SWEEPER SUNK. The Admiralty announce that the auxiliary mine-swoeper Clacton was torpedoed and sunk in the Levant. Five are missing. OLD TURK AND YOUNG TURK. DISSENSIONS GROWING. MOMENTOUS EVENTS EXPECTED. Received Aug. 7, 13.110 p.m. London, Aug. 6. A correspondent at Bucharest states that the approaching ruin of Turkey Jias quickened tbe Old Turks’ resolve to overthrow Enver Pasha. Important personages are continually recruiting Old Turks but the Austro-German armies keep Enver master of the situation. Executions almost daily occur of Enver’s enemies who dissimulate their hostility but foster the growing discontent. women besiege the War Ministry to give them back their men. If the Grand Sheriff proclaims himself Caliph and obtains recognition in the Moslem world momentous events 'may be expected. Latterly there have been most pronounced dissensions amongst the Young Turks in Constautinpole.
