FRENCH COMMUNIQUE.
ATTACKS COMPLETLY FA'l. STUBBORN FIGHTING LAST NIGHT. Received May 31, 13,5 p.m Paris, May 353. A communique states the battle was extreme]v violent all night on both hanhs of‘the Meuse in the Verdun region. Furious counter attacks on all our positions on Hill 5304. completely tailed. Tiio enemy westward of the Meuse, nuleiihly westward of Hill 5304, used numerous flame drejectors, enabling them to enter a trench, from whence a Imlnaut counter attack immediately drove them cut. The attack eastward of the Meuse, - despite intense, artillery preparation, was broken hy lire bd'oio it readied our lines Them lias been stubborn lighting in the Thiaumnnt and Douanmout sectors. The enemy in the night increased mass attacks, and after enormous losses reoeeupied one of the trenches northward of Thlaumout farm. We maintain positions everywhere else. The enemy was further pressed Hack inside* Douaumont fort, of which they hold only the north eastern corner.
