SPLENDID EXPLOIT OF THE LANCASHIRES.

In the Austro-Italiau war the Austrians are evidently copying German methods at Verdun and with the same expensive lesults. The Italians admit having withdrawn from some positions before the violence of the Austrian offensive, perhaps with the same motive as the French before the onset of the Germans. In any case the lunge they made cost them twenty thousand men in three days. It has been something of a puzzle to us as to why French airmen have been enabled to inflict such heavy Josses on the Germans at small cost to themselves. The explanation is given to-day. The French have a new machine which leaves the German boasted Fokker standing in the matter of speed. There is one German legislator who is bitterly disappointed in Britain, Who weuld have thought, he asks, that Britain would have adopted conscription, and he thinks that it is another proof that it intends to go right on in its career of 'wickedness. There has been a good deal of desultory fighting on the Western front, though devoid of any influence on the final result. There have been one or two small gains made by the Germans, offset at other points by successes on the part of the Allies. It is stated, how r ever, that a great German concaiflratiou is taking place in the lines opposed to the British, so we may hear of big happenings there shortly. Joffre has been appealing to Britain apparently to turn out more guns and ammunition. His [plea is that they can never have more than necessary and, no doubt, that is perfectly true. There will not -be enough until theyjcan rain shells upon the German positions along the whole front day and blight, like it rained water at the Flood.
