London, Feb. 16, A French wireless states that the German effort to advance at Artois and in the Champagne has definitely come to nothing. The assaults, - which had been Jong prepared, were carried ont at points forming salients of the German lines. Each assault was preceded by a formidable mine. It is estimated that it I took three months to prepare and the only result was that the Germans have occupied a few craters ■ and secured a footing in some French i salients. e It is certain that the Germans Ipst II half their effectives while engaged j in the attacks. ' STEAMERS AND CLUB DESTROYED. THE WORK OF INCENDIARIES. New York, Feb. 16, The steamships Bolton Castle and > Pacific were destroyed by a disastrous lire. Two deaths are reported. The pier was is suspected, as the steamers were loading munitions for Yladivostock. * Ottawa, Feb. 16. The American Club Buildings at Toronto were destroyed by explosion and fire. The Club was largely used to recruit Americans to serve in r the Canadian forces. One was killed and two injured.
