MR McKENNA INTERVIEWED.
BRITISH AND GERMAN RESGURGES ■■ ■ • ? A HOPEFUL CONTRAST. b THE RACE TO THE BRITISH. I - " London, Nov. 26. vjf? Mr R. McKenna, interviewed by f' J the New York Tribune, ,took the I'. most hopeful view of the situation, * • emphasising the splendid financial j, position of Britain. In a war of f" exhaustion the financial efforts of i! the conntry are one of the main fac- | • tors leading to success. Long before -4s British money runs short the supply , :| c. of German men will be exhausted, t The reserve of German man-power which has not been called up con- ? sists of men over 45 years and under f'■ 19. The permanent wastage of Ger- : jl. man soldiers is 200,000 per month, i;.' Nor are wo bearing the financial fi burdens alone among the combatant fi: nations. In the heart of an anpre- -.■•Tr cedented war, we have imposed ne w ttaxation of one hundred millions, r affecting all clasess; yet our propos- - ' als are welcomed jij every quarter. Mr McKenna, continuing, said; •tWo have now the unparalleled rev- 1 enue of 670 miilions from taxes alone. After fifteen months of war Y our gold market is free. Every scrap | of paper issued by the Government can be exchanged for gold at the ; s Bank of England. Germany’s system f ; admits of no taxation. Sho now can ■ | provide no means of meeting the 4 enormous liabilities incurred by the , | free issue of paper and the accumn- -M----lation of forced internal loans. Her | only hope is the exaction of an in- 4; demnity, but her enemies will never he defeated. Such liabilities must | lead to national repudiation or | bankruptcy. We must maintain our | exports, for we depend on that trade | to pay for the imports. By such ii means lam absoluely convinced that |j victory for the Allied is assured.” i
