Lewis Vernon Masters, telegraphist, Huhterville, is returning on the Toiua. The number of sheep in the Dominion this year is estimated to be 84,901,421, as compared with 24,798,763 for 1914. The Bulls Tennis Club intend opening the season on Wednesday, October 27th, and a cordial invitation has been extended to the public to attend. The courts are in lirst class order and a pleasant afternoon is anticipated. At the Marton Borough Council meeting last night, Cr, Spencer asked timidly if the Council might meet monthly during the summer months. The only response was a smile all round winch seemed to say with a loud voice “What!” and the questioner promptly subsided.

At the Rotorua Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Mr Dyers, S.M., sentenced David Adamson, grocer, of Matamata, to a month without the option for sly grog selling. Adamson disposed of 126 bottles of whisky in eleven weeks. ’ A man named Henry Millar, married, aged 28, was knocked undera motor car yesterday morning by a horse and sustained a fractured skull and leg. He died in Masterton hospital -without re : covering consciousness.

The late Dr. Grace died at Eltham, England. He had been ailing for some time. He had an attack of .cerebral hemorrhage a week ago, but appeared to be mending, when" he had a sudden relapse on Friday night.

Regarding the question of finding employment for returned wounded and sick soldiers, the Hon, G. W. Russell stated in Christchurch that, in addition to the arrangements being made by the department under the Hon. A. L. Herdman’s control, be (Mr Russell) had given instructions that the positions of lift menin connection with all the lifts belonging to the Government throughout the whole public service are to be entirely reserved for wounded soldiers on their return.

The area in rye grass for 1914 is only 50,533 acres, as compared with 55*, 936 acres tor 1913-14, the yield per acres 21 03 bushels as compared with 19.64, and the total yield 1,063,810 bushels as against 1,098,835 for the previous year. Only 17,551 acres are in cocksfoot this year as against 35,935 acres last year, the yield per acre is only 135.501b5, as against 191.11, and the total yield only 2,378,160, as against 4,956,438 last year. In potatoes, also,, there is a falling off, the acreage in potatoes this year being only 21,887 acres as against 29,164 last year, the yield per acre 6.08 tons as against. 5.39, and the total yield 133,635 tons as against 157,194 last year.

Correspondence 'between the Federal Government and Sir George Reid in reference to the nonrenewal of the latter’s term as High Commissioner has been published. Sir George Reid pointed out that he gave up his career at the Bar and in the Federal House .representing £4OOO per annum, to take up a position of great expense which -he looked upon as official,not as an uncertain political post, entitling him to expect renewal for another term if the discharge of his duties was satisfactory. Subsequently he received an implied promise of renewal from the Cook Government. The correspondence concludes with a letter from the Hon Mahon stating “this Government declines to recognise the right of a previous Government to bind successors by vernal arrangement in respect of future vacancies in the public ser-. vice.”

Owing to the increased motor traffic of Marton and surrounding districts, I have decided to open my old stables opposite my present premises for car and bicycle stands only. A general meeting, of members of the Marton Jockey Club will be held at the Club’s rooms, Lower High Street, at 7,510 this evening. The committee will meet at 8 o’clock. A farewell social to the men from Bulls and Lower Rangitikei district, who have enlisted, will be held in the Bulls Town Hall on Friday night. There will be a good programme of songs, recitations and short patriotic - speeches. In connection with the proposed new seating at the Town Hall, Cr. Spencer reported at the Borough Council meeting last night on a seat manufactured in Wanganui, and was further requested to inspect and report on the seats in use at His Majesty’s theatre, Wanganui. The death occurred suddenly yes terday morning of Mr Daniel Thurston, senior, at his residence, Utuwai, Apiti. Deceased, who was 68 j r ears of age, was well known in Palmerston and Rangitikei districts, having been proprietor of the Marton Hotel for some 20 years. Much sympathy will be felt for the wife and family in their bereavement.

Two rinks from the Marton Bowling <3lub visited Palmerston yesterday and played a friendly match against Terrace End Club. Terrace End won three out of the four games played. Folowing are the scores, Marton team being mentioned first in each case:--Hutchins, Upchurch, Martin and Stafford (skip) 13, Lind, Rumble, Tapp and R. Sollitt skip 31. Lowrie, Mogridge, Baxter and Duck (skip) 14, Sutton, Rumble, Tapp and Sollitt (skip) 25. Lowrie, Mogridge, Baxter and Duck (skip) 33, Snell, Mundy, Sutton and Marris (skip) 16. Hutchins, Upchurch, Stafford and Martin, (skip) 15, Snell, Mundy, Sutton and Marrs (skip) 20. This is the first inter-club match of the season and the games were greatly enjoyed. Messrs Mogridge and Son, Marton, announce that they have an abundance of toys in great variety, which were bought before the rise in prices, and they intend giving their customers the benefit of their early buying. A splendid display of American dolls, English, Jap and American mechanical toys, and New Zealand wood toys is tastefully arranged at the Book Arcade, where purchases can be made and stored till Christmas.

In the first place he was blest with healthy parents, was nursed in the natural way and what was of great importance he began with a real good set of teeth Throughout his life he had studiously x'efrained from cultivating indulgences of all descriptions. He put the ban on tobacco after his first smoke and had always been temperate in the matter of eating and drinking. Eat slowly and completely masticate the food was his preventive for indigestion. So far he had never experienced any organic disorder and ascribed his unbroken run of good health to sensible Indulgences and temperate habits.
