SOCIAL AT RATA.
Any gathering that helps to make life brighter and happier is worthy of support, and the social held last night in the Coronation Hall at Rata will not soon be forgotten. The event had been looked forward to by the residents, . and right well had they made preparations that make for success. The stage looked effective with its decorations of flags and plants and a merry company numbering over 100, judging from the applause, thoroughly enjoyed, the parlour games and musical items, while during the interval refreshments provided by the ladies of Rata on a most generous scale, were banded round by many willing hands.
Miss Holdaway. who has a pleasant soprano voice sauy “The Little Grey Home in the West,” receiving a well deserved encore, replied to with “My Treasure.” Mr Haddock proved himself a real elocutionist, as his “Bashful Man” created roars of laughter, and in reply to calls of more, gave “My Concession.” Mr and Mrs Hands sang a duet, the piece being entitled “A.8C.,” an item which was greatly appreciated. The contribution by the quartette, Messrs Sharpe, Holdaway, Allott and Bands was capital, and their rendering of “Catastrophe” was loudly applauded. Special mention must be made of Sharpe’s orchestra, which has now' become quite a part of any social function. Miss Wmchcombe was the accompanist, a position she always occupies with great credit to herself. During the proceedings the Rev. Rands thanked the ladies of Rata for the splendid manner in which they had shown themselves that evening and their generosity would not soon be forgotten. As usual Marton was well Mr Prebble’s popular motor bus “Kia Ora” was packed, and under skilful driving made a most comfortable journey, while others took motor car, and motor bicycle, and all arrived home safely, pleased with themselves, their neighbours, and the world in geileral.
