BOLTING OF THE BOSCHES
A RAGE FOR THE WOOD.
FELLING BOSH BY ARTILLERY. A HOT FIGHT. Reuter’s correspondent says the Bosches bolted like hares into - a wood describing the charges at Souchez. Simultaneously with the order to advance we exploded seven mines, completing the destruction of the trenches. We dashed hot on their heels. Some of our comrades stayed behind to explore the ravaged trenches and subterranean shelters which were 20 feet deep, throwing in bombs to prevent the occupants attacking us in th 6 rear. Fast as the Germans ran we soon caught up and occupied the second line of trenches in the middle of the wood. Some crossed the Souchez Brook and some went up the road Angreward. The enbmy brought up strong reserves and our offices recalled us to the first German trench.
Our atillery in the evening bombarded the wood and its aspect changed as if by enchantment. Soon only tree stumps remained emerging from a bungle of branches. We treated the German shrapnel philosophically because we were steel helmits. The next afternoon we reattacked the wood, stumbling over fallen branches. The German machine guns were troublesome as they were almost invisible in steel-plated pits. We sheltered in shell holes and bombers crept in behind the tree stumps and kept up a rain of bolmhs which soon drove the Germans out of the wood, which was burs for good. •
