ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Per Press Association
Greymouth, March 3, At the adjourned inquest into the death of Jus. Walker, found drowned in the Hookstetter tunnel workings, the theory of Mr Bishop, Inspector of Mines, was that deceased was overcome by the fumes from an oil engine exhaust pipes, which latter had an outlet in a separate incline drive. The pipes showed leakage at nearly all the joints, and the air current had been reversed. There were no'speolal regulations dealing With oil engines underground, and neither was it necessary to notify the Department of such use. The Inspector, in reply to a question, was of opinion that regulations concerning noxious fumes from steam engines also applied to oil engines. The doctor’s testimony supported the theory that the deceased died from monoxide poisoning, having a lower resistance than normal through extensive adherence of the right lung to the chest wall. A verdict was returned that death was due to monoxide poisoning. Gisborne, March 3.
As a sequel to the death of Gerhard Howe, labourer, who died from the effect of injuries received through being run over in Main street, Gisborne, by a motor car, on February 18th, Pahu Peaknrau, a half caste of Wairoa, was charged at the Police Court to-day with alleged manslaughter.
