ASSURANCE BY DEFENCE MINISTER. NO DANGER APPREHENDED. Per Press Association. Auckland, Nov. 28. In consequence of representations made by a deputation to the Mayor ' concerning the strength of the garrison ao Auckland forts. Mr Parr communicated,witn the Minister of Defence, who replied : “No material rearrangement is being made in the torts at Auckland. I should he glad if you would accept my personal assurance that every precaution has t>een taken for the protection of Auckland. Neither the Chamber of Commerce nor the Harbour Board need have the slightest apprehension. I am tm?ble to disclose the position in the Pacific, but, in my opinion, it is sufficiently satisfactory to advise you to inform the deputation that their fears are quite groundless.”

Wellington, Nov.-28. Christmas cheer for the New Zealand garrison at Samoa, in the form of oases containing all sorts of luxuries and comforts, have been sent by rail to AucKland fdr shipment by the Navna. The total consignment represents 108 cases, nil of which were filled with every conceivable kind of dainty, .from a ' fifty pound cake to a one pound l ■ plum pudding. The goods are a proof of the goodwill and generosity of relatives and friends in Wellington. CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE DOMINIONS. 9 UHANKS OF BRITISH GOVERNMENT, Wellington, Nov. 28. The following cable has been received by His Excellency, the Governor, from the Secretary of State for- the Col -uies. “I am about to lay before Parliament further correspondence concerning the munificent gifts which have so far been offered from the various parts of the Empire, and before doi.g PO I desire, on behalf of His Majesty’s Government, again to express their deep gratitude to all who have so generously, and in such diverse .ways, both publicly and privately, contributed to the /requirements of His Majesty’s Government and their 'Allies for purposes of alleviating . the distress caused by the war, and bringing it to a successful issue.
