MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Council met last night. Present: —His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Wilde, Sutcliffe, Lloyd, Ingle, Lewis and Sinclair. The Town Clerk wrote in reference to the Town Hall, stating that as the seating accommodation of the Town Hall is insufficient for the crowds that patronise pictures and visiting companies, it is imperative that tenders be called for the enlargement of the downstairs portion at once, iTans of which are now before yon. It is eleven years since the present hall was erected, and at that time it was quite large enough. Today the town has grown in numbers with the Junction township to warrant the Council to expend sufficient money to bring it up-to-date with other towns, including the seats which are quite out of date. —The Mayor was authorised to confer' with Mr Higgins, architect re the enlargement of the Town Hail.. The secretary of Marten Swimming Baths wrote asking for use of baths for sports on Saturday next.— Granted.
Mr Christensen, on behalf of Mr F Brice, waited on the Council re laying sewerage and water in Foliett street extension.—Town Clerk instructed to write to Masterton, Palmerston, Taibape, Wanganui, Hawera and Dannevirke in reference to the procedure taken in laying on of water and sewerage in sub-divi-sions of new lands. Mr E. Dommett’s tender for borough carting was accepted for 13 months. The Mayor was authorised to sign the petition re telephone extension until midnight. Tbe Marton doctors are to be asked to uoiifv the Borough Council of all infections diseases in the Borough. Mr H. J Gould’s appointment as borough engineer was confirmed. Mr F. O. Wilson is to be informed that he mast cut back bis maorocarpa hedge overhanging the footpath in Cubbabballa street. The police be written to pointing out the excessive speed at which motor cars and motor cycles travel through the borough, and asking them to prosecute offenders. The Works Committee was empowered to purchase a stone crusher, after consulting with the borough engineer and foreman. It was decided to reduce the rent of Mr O K. Cooke’s office In the Town Hall to 1 0a per week. A nnrabsr of applications for sewerage loans were held over till next Saturday in ordey to confer with the Finance Committee. The caretaker of Marton Park wrote complaining of the practice of persons riding cycles through the Park, and also of straying dogs.—lt was resolved that notices be posted prohibiting the riding of cycles through the Park, and dogs not being under proper control.
