THE AUCKLAND BRASS BAND CONTEST.

The following, report has been received by the secretary of /the Marton Baud, from the judge, Cap tain Bentley:— “THE OUTLAW.". (First Test.) - Moderate.—Attack good, but too loud; tone and balance excellent. - Allegretto.—Tone and balance very good, bat not enongh ores, and dim.: at 31 and 32. Rather-loud for m.f. at 30; ensemble very good at 36. So prano out of tune at 43. Horn, too loud. Allegretto—Too loud and crotchets short, excellent ores. at 19 and on, but'euphonium breaks, and aooom panirnents too loud. Tone and hal ance vary good at 17, but noi solid and tone rather blatant at end. Allegro—Ensemble very good here, and" very good ores. ; tone and bsl ance at 38 very good, bat net togeth er at 86. Moderate.—Cornets out of tune, and did cot start together, last chord bad. " Andante.—Broke first note, no marks, good tone, but expression only fair; sclo cornet, rather sharp, accompaniments too loud. Ensemble good at 14, but soprano ont of tune at 16. Excellent trombone at agi tato, bnt Baud not true in pitch at 35 f Excellent ensemble at >36 and on. Impresses me! no dim. at 35, last chord excellent. Allegro.—Execution of cornets very good ; ensemble very good and excellent ores. ; but rather ragged at 25 and on. Bass solo very good; attack very good at 37, bat last chord-rather brassy.

Points awarded’possible 150.—Accuracy of notes, time, etc (possible 20) lb j intonation (20) 18; quality of tone (20) 10; balance of tone (20) 19; expression and executive skill (20) 18; attack and finish (10) 9; pace (10) 10; general effect (30) 27; total, 188. v‘‘LA FORZA DEL DBSTINO.” Second Teat. Allegro.—Attack excellent and recision also; tone ami balance excel lent. Soprano trill ail right; excel lent dim. at 42. -Fiu Lento. —Solo nice tone, but broke at 49 ; ensemble at 53 excel lent, but one bungles at 56, and horn and euphonium out of tune' at 58. Allegro.—Melody very nicely giv en, excellent at 18, no blaring ; ex oellent precision at 26, but too much rest at 27. Semiquavers bungled at 30 and 34. Excellent soprano' at 45 and 46; but trill at 52 bad. Artiou lation at 30 and 32 not good Soprano tiring, bis trill a farce ; solo bangles semiquavers at Horn and euphonium again oat of tone. Soprano cadenza excellent. Andante. —Solo excellent tdne, but broke note at 2; expression .very good, but smashes that A, at 6. >Har mony excellent at 8,9, and 10, and solo excellent at 11; ensemble excel lent at 31 and on, but solo still skit tisb. Cornets well at 24, excellent trombone at 27 ; excellent emphasis at 31 and 32, but soprano rather sharp at 37, and horn at 41. Vivo. —Excellent attack and preci sion. but crotchets might be longer, excellent ores, and grand ensemble at 30 Euphonium alters value of notes in cadenza, but finishes well. Adagio.—Euphonium good tone, but broke Dat 2; excellent ores, and dim. at 5. Andante.—Good trombone, excellent £one, sustained notes excellent at 4 and 8. Expression of trombone very good, especially at 14 and on ; nice ensemble at 18, an excellent morendo at 20; excellent at 23, but repiano late at 23. . Andante. —Accompaniments excellent and trombone also at 4; soprano rather sharp at 6; but ensemble ex oellent. Duet very nice at 9; excel lent ores, and dim. at 16 and 16. Am very pleased with this lent ores."and dim. at 20. Excellent interpretation at finish. Allegro.—Excellent quaver accom paniments and melody, but comets rather out of tune at 16. Excellent ensemble at 27 and on ;> excellent tone and balance at 35 and at pin mosso. Excellent ensemble, attacks and finish. Points awarded (possible 150). — Excellence of nctea, time, etc. pos sible (20) 18; intonation (20) 19; quality of- tone (20) 20.; balance of tone (20) 20; expression and exeou tive skill (20) 18; attack and finish (10) 10; pace (10) 10; general-effect (80) 30; total, 145. v “IMPBRATOR.” ' B GRADE MARCH. Attack very good,and marks good, but side drum too loud, and quavers at 8 and 12 hurried. aide drum not braced up, but bass drum good; Soprano unsteady at 25 and no ores, and dim at 21; no ores, at 31 and 82, and very unsteady' at 41; tone and balance good but no emphasis at 38. Tempo exact, but not enough soprano for good ensemble. Cornets tiring at 13 in trio., and not enough ores, and dim at 21;- not p. enough in trio, but tofie and balance still good. Points awarded, 88. Possible, 100. ' ‘
