Hagh Dalrymple, ex-convicfc, sued the Baroness Von Goetz, a wealthy philanthropist and organiser of farms for discharged prisoners. Dalrymple alleged that he had loaned tie Baroness money and produced scores of the Baroness’ letters containing endearments. A sensational cross-examination by counsel proved that Dalrymple had been convicted of frauds on women in 1896, In order to explain discrepances in the letters Dalrymple alleged that his twin brother was responsible. Dalrymple’s counsel threw up his brief and a verdict was returned for defendant. The Judge impounded a hundred letters which were obvious forgeries. Evidence was given that the Baroness had forty thousand in the Bank at the time of the blackmailing.
