SLANDERING MAORI CLERGYMAN.

A GISBORNE ’CASE. Per Press Association, Gisborne, June 2(5. At the Supreme Court to-night Justice Cooper heard a claim for £SOO for -slander brought by Wi Faraere, a native clergyman and well-known Rugby football player, against Weretene Te Ariki Huka, a native woman. The plaintiff contended that defendant had slandered him by stating that he, a married man, was the father of Te Wia’s child The parties hail from Nubaka, where plaint.fC was at one time stationed Plaintiff is at present assistant master at Toran College for native Divinity students. Wi Paraere denied the suggestion of parentage, and stated that the reason he brought the action was to clear his character as an ordained clergyman of the English Church. A good deal of evidence was heard, and the case was adjourned till tomorrow.
