SYDNEY GAS STRIKE.

A SETTLEMENT REACHED. United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Sydney, March 7. A dozen Technical College youths who volunteered to assist in making gas, marched four deep to the Kent Street gas works, where eight hundred strikers were waiting to receive wages due. First, the youths were merely hooted, but when they turned down the gas lane they were assailed with streams of beer from the adjacent hotel. The boys found that they had gone through the wrong gate, and marched hack the same route, followed by a jeering crowd, including a number of women. As the boys reached George St , there were cries of “Down them,” and they were surrounded. One was struck on the jaw, hut the presence of a solitary constable did something to check the hecklers. A number of plain clothes constables appeared and bundled the youths into a passing tram. The conference, seven representatives on each side, sat all the afternoon. The Hons. McGowen, Flowers, Carmichael and Eden were present, A partial gas service was available In the city from 5 to 10 o’clock tonight. Later. The strike has ended. A settlement was reached hy the conference, hut the terms were not revealed. Work will he|resumed at all gasworks at two to-morrow afternoon. Received March 8, 8 a.m. Sydney, March 8. After the conference Mr McGowen announced that an agreement had been reached by mutual consent, and the men would go back to work ongSaturday afternoon. He declined to disclose the terms. From other sources it is gathered that a| meeting of strikers was held this Incoming to rattitfy the pro- , visional agreement which there was reason to believe would prove acceptable to them. At a meeting of gas workers last night satisfacton was expressed at the favourable turn of events. Sydney, March 8. The secretary of the Gasmen’s Union stated that [the only thing he could disclose about the conference was that the agreement provided that every man goes back to his old place.
