PUBLIC SERVICE.
Per Press Association. Wellington, March 5. In order to carry out as far as practicable their decision to see every officer in the public service .before issuing their first classification the Commissioners proceed to the South Island to-night. It is officially announced that since the Commissioners assumed office at the beginning of the year the progress of the work undertaken has been greater than was anticipated. The inspection of departments, preparation of regulations under the Act and preparation and the first draft of classification have been proceeding concurrently. The inspection of departments by the Commissioners themselves will occupy the greater portion of the present year, but in order to bring inspection into a forward state a committee of expert record clerks has been set up to report on the systems. of record in Government departments with the object of adopting a system for all branches of the service. The Report Committee and expert accountants from the public service are now making inquiries with the object of ascertaining whether duplication or overlapping exists. This committee is expected to report about the middle of April. An expert statistician is also examining the statistical work of the Departments with the object of ascertaining where improvements can he made. The classification should be ready about Ist June.
