FAREWELL TO MR D. C. TENNENT.
Last night a farewell supper social was given bv the members of the Marton Bowilng Club to Mr D. C. Tennent, the president, who is leaving Marton this week for a twelve months' trip to Europe. The chair was occupied by the Vice-President, Mr J. Mogridge. Apologies were received from the following members■:—Messrs West M. Awdry, C. B. Collins, E. Newman, R. K. Simpson, R. Hanger, W. J. Rees, A. Aiken, Sergt.-Major Brighting, W. C. Kensington, F. R. H. Brice, T. H. Bredin and E. Herbert.
After the usual loyal toast, the Chairman in a happy speech proposed the health of the President, and said that Mr Tennent was one of the foundation members of the Club and its first secretary ten years ago, and he is now the president, and tiie Club can ill afford to spare him, as during this season the Club has gone ahead most wonderfully, and he will be very much missed on the green. The Chairman on behalf of the members presented Mr Tennent with a very handsome travelling rug, and a case of pipes. The toast was drunk, with musical honours.
Mr Tennent responded, and told the members the history of the Club's inception, and in his usual modest manner disclaimed any credit, and said the members had to thank another for starting the Club, who also took a very active interest in bowling for some time, and although not now a player lie has the right bias to the glorious sport. "The Bowling Association and Neighbouring Clubs," proposed by Mr L. Mclndoe, was replied to by Mr B. Parkes.
The health of Mr G. Smallbone, who has been transferred to Waihi, was drunk with musical honours, and he responded with a graceful little speech. The health of the Secretary was proposed by Mr Tennent, and diank with enthusiasm, and in responding Mr Ninniss made some telling comments on bowling matters. Mr Aynsley also spoke. During the evening Mr Garside eang two songs. Messrs Cummins, Trott and Tennent also sang, and Mr Ninniss gave a recitation. Mr Bert Crozier presided at the piano in his usual finished style, and his health warf also drunk and responded to.
