LABOUR TROUBLES.
OBJECTION TO ASIATICS. United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph Copyright. Newcastle, December 17. The Japanese tramp steamer Hakaehikamaru arrived this morning from Sydney en route to New Zealand with timber and general cargo. While preparing to load hardwood from New Zealand an intimation was received from the New Zealand Seamen’s Union advising the men to refuse to handle the cargo owing to the ship possessing an Asiatic crew. The loading was therefore stopped. THREATENED SHIPPING STRIKE. Received December 18, 1 p.m, Melbourne, December 18. The High Court’s decision in the Merchant Service Guild case has caused much dissatisfaction to members of the organisation, and an inter-State shipping strike is predicted if the Companies revert to the old rates of payment. The men are determined if the proposals to he shortly placed before the employers are not accepted L to cease work in each State. SHEARERS’ DIFFICULTY SETTLED. Per Press Association, Wellington, December 17. The trouble which occurred in several stations lately over the shearing of dagged sheep has been settled by the payment of 2s 6d per hundred extra to men handling such sheep. THE SLAUGHTERMEN’S DEMANDS. Wellington, December 17. Representatives of the North Island meat freezing companies meet in Wellington to-morrow to consider the demands of the Slaughtermen’s Federation. The demands will be discussed in Christchurch at the end of the week by a conference of representatives of all freezing companies in the Dominion.
