The Federal Shire liner Nairnshire, which arrived here on Saturday afternoon from Liverpool via Hobart, experienced a cyclonic storm on November IBtb, eight days alter leaving Capetown. The, sea was very rough 'and the gale developed a velocity of 80 miles an home Oil was freely used. The gale continued all the afternoon on the 19th and all day on tho 20th, the sea moderating at midnight. Huge seas broke on board, flooding a great part ox tho vessel, especially the steerage quarters, Two horse boxes were washed out of wire lashings. The steerage skylight and the door and part of tho companion way were carried away. There were 49 passengers in tho steerage and cnose lost most of their effects. The women and children were moved into the first saloon with nimculty by the officers. Owing to the engine-room becoming flooded, three fires were doused, the lighting dynamo being thrown out of work. Great difficulty was therefore experienced in getting the women and oliildr .i along ..the deck m the dark and amidst tho ’waves breaking! on board. The third officer, who was carryk g a little girl, had to climb the rigging for safety The storehouse oil tho after deck was washed R wav. The stout iron framework was’bcut hud broken as if it were wire. The officers’ ami engineers room on the main deck was ali smashed in. Later, another heavy sea. broke on Tjoaxil, sm&sning tno winch steam pipes and casings. That evening the engine-room was again flooded and the huge ventilator lor the steerage quarter torn from the deck fastenings. At _ cigiuc o’clock a heavy sea broke amidslup, smashing the accommodation ladder to splinters and flooding tho galley, the butcher’s shop and'also damaging the front saloon deck. At midnight the sea began to moderate and temporary repairs were effected, iernianeut repairs will be completed on the return of the Nairnshire to Lnglaud. During tho storm, Stuart, a seaman, had his thigh broken, ibe ' ship’s carpenter was struck on the back by a falling derrick, sustaining bruises, and an engine-room greaser sustained a crushed wrist. ino nrst Huito W3.s sitting in bis wb©u a wave threw an iron: deck [casing off the anchor chains through the doorway, smashing it and missing his head by a few inches. ihe steerage [passengers IdSt ali then personal effects.
