SYDNEY BUTCHERS’ TROUBLE
United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph Copyright, Sydney, December 14. The employees in the butchers’ shops yesterday gave the employers a week’s notice. They intimated that they were open for re-engage-ment, but only’on the understanding that they did not work after 6 o’clock on Saturdays. BRITISH RAILWAY STRIKE. London, December 14. The North Railway announces that it offered on Thursday to reuistate every,striker at his old pay, but was not prepared to dismiss new 'hands whom it had promised permanent positions. The strikers apparently believe |that this reservation is likely to intenere with promotion. A twelve hours’ conference on Friday was without result. Both parties are hopeful. STRIKE SETTLED. Received December 16, 9 a.m, London, December 15. ’ Mr Chester Jones found that Knox was not drunk. Mr McKenna advised the King to give him a free pardon. The strike has been settled and Knox reinstated. The striker who resume will he fined six days’ pay. The men’s representatives agreed not to strike in future without legal notice. The men employed during the strike accepted compensation in lieu of continued employment The strikers arc dissatisfied with the settlement, and declare that the leaders sold them again.
AN INQUIRY ORDERED. London, December 15. At the request of the Midland Directors and the Amalgamated Society of Railway men, Mr_ Buxton has appointed a commissioner to inquire into the alleged breaches ot the 1911 settlement.

Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants has £48,656 the fighting fund which is invested in British railways and every strike depreciates the stock, COST OF RAILWAY STRIKE. I The Telegraphists say there will | be a light to a finish. _ I Melbourne, December 15. | A meeting of telegraphists will be | held on Monday to consider the developments in Sydney. Received December 16, 1 p.m. Sydney, December 10. A big meeting of telegraphists decided to work under the new schedule for one week pending representation to Mr Fisher in view of having matters in dispute submitted to arbitration at the earliest possible moment. , The new schedule of hours for tne telegraphists came into force at 8 o’clock this morning. The men say they will be working but will continue the old hours whatever developments. Messages for New Zealand possibly will be able to reach La Perouso cable station, whence the Eastern Extension . Company’s operators transmit them.
