Mr Hunter, replying to a statement by the Women’s League before the Empire Commission, asserts that New South Wales takes every precaution. He attributes the attack to pique at the Department’s refusal to permit the League to interfere with the management of immigration. Mr Hunter has communicated with the Commission protesting against it being made a vehicle for unjustifiable attacks. Paris, October 15. Lepreux, a clerk of the Suez Canal Company, who was arrested in March for fraudulent appropriation of £BO,OOO worth of shares, has been sentenced to seven years. London, October 15. Mr Kirkpatrick, giving evidence before the Dominions Commission, explained fully the South Australian emigration system and detailed arrangements for domestic servants, which, he claimed, were equal, if not superior, to any country’s.
