AMUSEMENTS.

MR SOOTT LESLIE. The Manawatu Evening Standard says:—Mr Pcott Lssliei san accomplished elocutionist, who created a very favourable impression when he appeared here in the Margaret Cooper combination. He is equally at his ease in humorous and heavier parts, and when in character he shines with particular brilliancy. He opened last night with the monologue. “You Can’t Please Everybody,” followed gby the Chevalier character sketch, “The Workhouseman. ’ ’ He was loudly encored, and on his reappearance he cleverly impersonated a dandy. Two other items by the originator of the workhouse sketch —“The Veteran” and the rustic study, “Wot Yur Do Ee Love Oi?”—provided opportunities for the display of the artist’s versatility, but bis finest effort was the whimsical yet tragical recital, “Don’t Know, Don’t Care” (Bovill), a remarkable picture of defiant pessimism. Mr Scott Leslie gave numerous encore items during the evening, and proved himself an admirable raconteur. He is one of the most convincing impersonators seen here for a long time. Supporting the principal were Miss Gwenyth Evans, a contralto, Mr Oliver Farrow, basso, and Miss Daisy Evans, pianiste, all of whom contributed much to the enjoyable nature of the programme. The lady vocalist has a nice clear register, and rendered several ballads very sweetly, her numbers including “My Dear Soul” (Sanderson), “Douglas Gordon” (Kellie), and encores to both items. Mr Farrow has a. capital range. His items were ‘The Windmill” (Nelson), “King* Charles” (Valerie White), and as an encore, “Byes that Used to“ Gaze in Mine. ’ ’ Miss Daisy Evans was a sympathetic accompanist. Altogether the entertainment was a most acceptable one. Mr Scott Leslie and his Company will appear in Marton Town Hall to-morrow evening. The plan is at Mogridge’s.
