The steamer San Francisco, loaded with a cargo of explosives intended for the fleet’s inse, narrowly escaped colliding with a, Government yaclit, on which were the Navy secretary and other high officials. Disaster was avoided by a few feet. If the vessels had hit, their captains admitted that nothing could have prevented the entire destruction of both.
