ROOSEVELT SHOT.

When outside an hotel en route to deliver a political address in the Milwaukee Auditorium, Mr Roosevelt was shot in the breast. He refused to allow doctors to examine him, and, with the bullet still in his bodv, spoke to a huge audience. Towards the end of the address lie became weak through loss of blood, and was removed to an hotel. The assailant disappeared. Mr Roosevelt was removed to a temporary hospital. The wound has been pronounced one which will not cause death. Mr Roosevelt declares that too much fuss is being made of a trifling matter. The announcement while the meeting was in progress that Mr ’Roosevelt had been shot threw the audience into a panic, bub the chairman begged all to remain calm. Mr Roosevelt continued his speech, but grew visibly weaker towards the close. The audience frantically cheered when he refused to sit clown. Mrs Roosevelt heard the news while attending a theatre in Now York. , The assailant is named Joan Shrank, and he is a resident of New York. The mob tried to lynch him, but the police prevented them. When arrested, Shrank declared that any man who sought a third term as President ought to be shot. When searched at the police station, documents were found in the man’s possession showing _ that he had a dream wherein President McKinley’s spirit visited him, indicated Mr Roosevelt as McKinley’s murderer, aud asked him to take vengeance on Roosevelt. Shrank is undoubtedly crazy. Received October 16, 1 p.m. Chicago, October 15. Mr Roosevelt was taken to the hospital here, arriving by special train. The surgeons have not extracted the bullet yet. It is deeply embedded in the wall of the chest, but the lungs were not penetrated, and the patient’s condition is normal. An operation has been deferred pending further investigation. A letter found on the assailant indicates that he believed himself to be an instrument of the Almighty to remove Roosevelt. Mr Roosevelt’s political campaign will have to be abandoned, absolute rest being prescribed. As he descended from the train suapshotters took him by flashlight. “Gosh! shot again!” was his jovial comment. New York, October 15. At Milwaukee Schrauk appeared before the Court charged with attempting to kill Colonel Roosevelt. Ho pleaded guilty and asked for a speedy trial. The Judge "expressed a belief that there was a possibility of the bullet being poisoned. The doctors disbelieve this suggestion.
