ACTRESS MARRIED IN VILLAGE SMITHY.
There has just been a revival of the old-time romance of Gretna Green, two couples having chosen to be married in the Border village smithy, in preference to the orthodox places. In the first wedding the names of the happy couple were not made generally known. Before it was over most fo the village folk heard of it, and when the happy pair emerged from the smithy the bystanders gave them a hearty greeting. In connection with the second union a telegram arrived at Gretna Green from Glasgow asking that preparation should be made for an old-time wedding. This, of course, caused a ?«good deal of excitement, and when a carriage and pair returned from the railway station with a young couple the villagers were ready with. a cheer. The bridegroom gave his name as James Bromley Ohallenor, and stated that lie had resided for the requisite J statutory period of 31 days hi i Kothesay on the Clyde. TUo bride, | who stated that she V/as an actress, | gave her name as Emma Woodward, ! add that she was well known pro- j fessionally as Marjorie Astor, which | name she affixed to the register, as I well as her proper name. After j they had formally taken each other j for husband and wife, and answered | the questions which£| constitute a j marriage in Scotland, there was some doubt as to whether the j ceremony would be legal without a ring. The officiating “minister, ’’ ; Mr John told the couple , that they were married according to j the laws of Scotland and Gretna ' Green, but , that if they had a ring he would put it on. A ring was then produced by the bridegroom, and it was placed on t the bride’s finger by the minster. After the ceremony a number of villagers were entertained at a banquet by the bridegroom, and the health of the couple was drunk with much en-; thusiasm. A jovial evening was ; afterwards spent, and the bride and bridegroom returned by a late train to Glasgow. i
