Per Press Association. ■ Gisborne, March 16 At the Supreme Court Joseph Nnroroft was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for having failed to keep proper books, Justice Cooper making sentence lenient in consideration of the state of health of accused and his wife. Patrick John Hofen was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on a charge or fraud in respect to certain chattels under a bill of sale. William John Knight pleaded guilty to two charges of sheep stealing, and was remanded for senMoggard was acquitted on a charge of assaulting John Mullins, a labourer, on the railway line, and robbing him of £7B Wellington, March 16, Before the Chief Juxtioe to-day Robert Bertling, superintendent of Wellington Zoo, claimed £2OOO from John Norton, proprietor of Truth, for alleged libel. The case was tried before a special jury. Defendant denied that the words complained of reflected on plaintiff in his occupation, or had been published falsely or maliciously. They were not libellous or defamatory, and in their natural and ordinary signification they were true in substance and in fact it was stated that an apology had been published which was said by plaintiff to be no apology at all, but a case of adding insult to Injury. The case is proceeding. Gisborne, March 16.
At the Supreme Court William John Knight, for sheep stealing, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
