CRICKET.
What proved one of the most exciting finishes in a game yet played in Marton was contested between North and South Rangitikei yesterday. North consisted of players from Nganrakehu, “Moawhango and Taihape, Whlla Sooth resolved itself at the last moment into players c£ the marton O.U. ■■and' Hussey of the Hnntcrville Club. Play began a little after ten by the North batting to the bowling of Morgan and Hussey. Nothing of note occurred except the slow scoring of the visitors, who took considerably over two hours to compile their unexpectedly small score. Morgan bowled very well, 15 overs, 7 maidens, 23 runs, and 0 wickets, but several easy catches were misseu off him. Led - ward’s steady defence was remarkable, he carrying his bat right through for 30 inns without a ohanoe. South began tbsir “ innings about 1 30, and were all cut lor 98, the tail scarcely wagging, while the smart fielding of the visitors was a contrast to that in general use on this ground. The 93 took over 2 hours to compile. Olliver was by far the most successful bowler. About four. South commenced their second innings and in a very short time, due chiefly to Hussey’s nowliog and energy, it dawned slowly on the South that there was still a chance of winning. Three wickets were down for 29 runs, 4 for 29, 5 for 29, 6 for 31, 7 for 31. then matters hung a little, but the innings closed at about 5 o’clock for 51 runs. Hussey had abandoned bia leg, a ia Armstrong theory, and bowling cleverly infused some life into the usually apathetic Marton fieldsmen. Hussey bowled 11 overs, 4 of which were maidens, for 33 runs, and secured 6 wickets, 4 of which were clean bowled and two I b.w. Kerr, a new bowler, bowled 5 overs, three nf whioh were maidens, for 9 runs, and two wickets, and Ross took two wickets in one over for four runs. Morgan again bowled well, but with no Kick. South had 66 runs to get in 50 minutes. Hussey and Ross'were sent in and kept well ahead of time, hut at 51 Roes, who had been bitting hard and well was'caught, having scored 31 one for 51. Marshall followed, but having scored 4 was also caught two for 56. Ten runs were wanted, and only about 13 minutes to get them in. Bread followed, but at 58 Hussey was smartly stumped by Hill, having played lively cricket for 23. Braithwaite followed, . but Broad having made two was unfortunately run out and time was on the wing. Braithwaite was caught out for one. Swainson having filled Broad’s wicket Cook now filled Braithwaifee’s and after waiting a breath or two made a fine drive over the bowler's head, and one only was required to win. The next ball Oook hit to leg for three and South had won what after all was a good game by six wickets and within five minutes of time. Many thanks of both combinations are due to those gentlemen who kindly assisted in the scoring and umpiring. It is hoped to play a return before the end of the season up North.
