The Post reports that at the last meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board a letter was received from a resident of Cpunake, asking whether' in the event of her removing from Opnnake to Stratford the Board wonld extend to her the assistance at present being given to her by the Hawera Board; also whether the Board wonld hear the coat of her removal to Stratford. (The reading of this letter, needless to say. caused some laughter, a member remarking tha tthe applicant did not want much anyway). The secretary reported having replied in the negative in a sufficiently decisive manner. Changes in trade channels and industrial depression somewhat affected the bnsiness of the Manchester ship canal during the latter half *ot 190$. The amount of traffic handled was 2,313,800 tons, as against 3,507,000 tons in the 'corresponding period of 1907. The gross receipts amounted to £401,500, as against £439,400, and the net revenue to £149,600, as compared with £161,700. The available „ balance at net revenne account is. £15,600, as against £59,300, and net revenne charges amount to £5,000, as compared ‘with £44,900, the increase being due to the interest on the 4 per cent, perpetual debenture stock issued last year. In respect to the whole of 1908 the traffic carried declined* from 5,211.000 to 4,553,C00 tons, and the gross receipts from £835,400 to £776. 40q.
