THE APITI SHOW.
From Our Kimbolton CorrespondentThough somewhat “removed from the busy haunts of men, ’ the small but fast growing township of Apiti is as progressive and up to date asany township of its size in the Do- , minion. Impelled by this spirit of of progress Apiti, like many larger towns, holds its annual Horticultural Show, but I know of,no other that does such credit to its town and district. The Apiti' Horticultural and Industrial Society are to be congratulated on the * success of their sixth anneal show, which was held on Friday, April 2nd. Notwithstanding the fact that the climatic conditions were anything hut favonrable, the, attendance was most satisfactory. The member for the district, Mr D. H. Guthrie, M. P.. was present, and residents from surrounding districts attended in great force. The outstanding feature of the show was undoubtedly the magnificent dispaly of vegetables, farm produce and fruit. It was the unbiassed opinion of several well-known judges from the districts of Feiiding and KimboltOQ that no finer display of this class of exhibits (so far as quality was concerned) had yet been seen even at the Palmerston Show. The cookery exhibits formed another section of the Show that calls for special mention on account of its excellence, the display being a large one and in every way exceedingly creditable That well known potato grower and nursery gardener, Mr W.‘ G. London, of the Valley road, Kimbolton, had on view, for exhibition only, a surprisingly fine oolleotion of cactus dahlias, over 40 different varieties being exhibited, each a perfect gem of its kind. Alongside the dahlias was shown a new variety of rhubarb, which attracted considerable attention. The exhibition in the industrial section was distinctly inferior to that of former years, which is to be regretted for many reasons. Flower entries showed a slight falling off as compared to last year, due no doubt in part to the unfavourable weather. Very creditable to the Apiti School was their winning both first and second prize for the best oolleotion of antumn vegetables against all the schools in the district. With the exception of the flower and the industrial exhibits, the entries in every case showed a large increase on the last year’s record.
“In cut flowers, pot plants and decorations Mrs J. Richardson and Mrs Duncan were the chief prize winners. Mr J. F. Pawaon secured the points prize for vegetables, and Mrs Cocks dn farm produce. In bread and sweets Mrs Bonnet gained most points, Mr Field was most successful in poultry and Mr 6. H.' Cummerfield in the dog classes.
