H Lover,/head of the firm of Lever Bros,, has Instituted prosecution of the Dailv Mail ami Evening News for lihel'iu .connection with the Soap Trust. He declares that the attacks on the Trust cost him in a low weeks £40,000 on sales alone, while two millions worth of £lO preference shares of the firm declined £1 each, besides other losses on ordinary shares and regards goodwill. The Daily Mail and The Mirror withdrew the imputation against Lever and the actions were settled with £50,000 damages. . Mr Bufua Isaac, counsel for the newspaper, announced that in view of Lever’s demeanour in the witness box lie withdrew the plea of justification. Mr Justice Lawrence commended this as an honourable and proper course.
The damages awarded are exclusive of taxed costs.
