APITI NOTES.
From Our Own Correspondent,
An interesting debate “Should Chinese be allowed free access to New Zealand?’’ was held on Thursday under the auspices of the Debatini? Society. Miss Leslie and Mrs Matthews spoke for the affirmative and Dr. Gregory and Mr Matthews for the negative. Tho former won on a show of hands. Owing to the largo number of applicants afternoon and evening classes have been arranged for dressmakng in connection with tho Technical School. Sufficient inducement lias also been offered to start classes for arithmetic and English.
Tho Public Hall Committee met on Saturday evening to receive plans and specifications and to elect a working committee from tlieir number. The following wore appointed : Messrs H. Osborne, Dr. Gregory, W. McKay, H. Bennett, H. Elliott and G. Duncan. Arrangements were also made in connection with finance. Onr school committee is an energetic body. The garden lias been fenced off, and necessary repairs attended to. On Saturday a busy time was spout logging up and burning stumps in the boys’ playground.
