SENSATIONAL WEDDING.
Americau papers state that Mr ; Oorey, the divorced Steel King, and : Miss Mabelle Gilman, his actressbride, were kept in suspense until two hours before their midnight wedding by the hunt for a clergyman willing to brave public opinion by marrying them. At length the Rev. J. L. Clarke, Congregational pastor of Brooklyn, consented, and arrived at the Hotel Gotham shortly before ! 11 to find the wedding party looking more like a fuueralassembly. After the arrival of the minister, however, the guests brightened up, and took their seats at the £IOOO supper. It was in reality a simple meal, which any New York restaurant could have furnished for 16s a head. But the gorgeous accessories explained the extravagance. For more than two hours the guests revelled in the pleasures of the banquet, and then they passed through a long, ] elaborately decorated corridor to a, .. small room, which wag fitted up for I the occasion to resemble a chapel. The Chaplain, taking his position in a bower of flowers, ornamented with American beauty roses, and orchids, pronounced the marriage service while the couple kneeled on a white satin prie-dieu. As soon as the ceremony ended Mr Oorey distributed among the reporters costly photographs of his wife and an official account of the wedding. This done, he thought his duty to the press ended. Accordingly he
flew into a violent rage when ho arrived with his wife at two in the morning on the North German Lloyd pier to find anlozen cameras concentrated on his carriage. “Try to take a snapshot of my wife and I’ll smash you,” ho shouted furiously. The click of the cameras was the sole response. When they gained the deck the bridegroom, purple with rage, faced the reporters who had gathered below. ‘ 1 Well, gentlemen, what new horror do you wish to spring me? You should bo ashamed to ask me to say anything after the unkind things printed about me. A gentle touch on the arm from Mrs Corey ended this explosion. The bridal couple disappeared in the captain’s suite. All the newspapers solemnly declared that the country
has a right to demand that a man who occupies a position of such enormous responsibility shall be serious in his action and behaviour. They say bo has outraged the proprieties, and think that he ought to be made to resign the presidency of the Steel Trust. The _ attitude is generally appioved of bis 18 year old son', who declined the invitation to attend the ; midnight wedding, adding, ”1 know bat one dniy , niy place isjwith mv mother.” J
