ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Press Association. Dunedin, July 10. An inquest was held this afternoon as to the death of an infant named- Hector McPherson who died on Tuesday. The verdict was that death was due to diphtheria, and the jury added the following rider:—'“ The jury desire lo comment most strongly on the complete neglect of the health authorities to take any action in the present case, the same being a serious menace to the health of the community, and would also draw attention to the absence of any place for the isolation of infectious cases, and trust that the newspaper press will not ceasa to urge on the proper authorities the necessity for immediate action to remedy the present state of affairs.” Dr Ogston, Health Officer, Dunedin, states, in regard to tho inquest on Hector McPherson, that no blame was attachable to his Department, and that on receipt of Dr Pulton’s message he sent forward an order to the Hospital authorities who were bound by law to provide for such cases but they took no steps in the matter. Napier, July 10. Tho adjourned inquest on Charles Henry Jones, aged 19, farm labourer, who died on May 14th under circumstances suggesting poisoning, was held yesterday. The report of Government Analyst on tho contents of the stomach stated that arsenic was found in large quantities while traces of arsenic were discovered in a tumbler found near deceased’s whare. The jury found that death was due to arseuicl noisoning, but there was no evidence to show whether the poison was taken intentionally.
