COUNTIES CONFERENCE.

The Counties Conference has passed the following remits : —That when a road district merges info a county the subsidy payable to such Road Board shall be paid into the funds of the County Council irrespective of the £SOO limit; that Government be requested to take into consideration the question of giving County Councils power to enter the name of any defaulting ratepayer upon the County electoral roll in force for the time being with twenty-eight days’ notice, anything contained in the Counties Act, 1886, to the contrary notwithstanding ; that the time has arrived when powers conferred upon Borough Councils under the Municipal Corporations Act as regards all drainage should be extended to County Councils; that where the county offices are situated outside county boundaries and the business of the county is conducted within such offices the same should be sufficient to fulfil all requirements of the Dog Registration Act as though the offices were situated within the county. July 11.

At the Counties Conference to-day it was resolved that the incomplete manner in which native lands are entered in the valuation rolls renders the collection of rates by the local body on such lands an impossibility and nullifies the object of the Native Lands Rating Act; that provision ho made in the Government valuation of Land Act compelling the Yaluor-General to insist in the valuation roll of the local authority tho name of the occupier “and owner of all native land rateable within tho meaning of the Native Lands Act.

The Conference rejected a motion that Governmnt he asked to take over all responsibility with regard to upkeep and administration of old people’s homes in the colony.
