PATRIOTISM AND MORAL INSTRUCTION.
At its June meeting Wanganui Education Board resolved upon the following method of inculcating patriotic and moral sentiment. On at least one day of each week the pupils of the upper classes of each school shall, under the superintendence of the head-teacher, or, whore that is impossible, of the class tpachsr, go through'some' such programme as the following:— ' 1. (a) A reading from some se* leefed portion of history, (b) An address on some topic connected with the development of the Empire, its extant, countries, resources, peoples, trades and defence, illustrated as far as possible by pictures and views. (0) Recitation by a pupil of some essay connected with some of the foregoing topics, (d) Beading of incidents or stories from the lives of the great men of our race, illustrating the qualities that have made the Empire, such as enterprise, daring, endurance, self-sacrifice, or of some manifestation of genius, (e). LessouS on' civic virtues; such as purity, honesty, courage, temperance, and the civic duties_ such-- as voting power, loyalty, patriotism. 2. the saluting of the flags ‘of thq native fluid and of the Empire, ' |j. the 'singing' of flip-' Rational .Anthem- ' Jfdte.Wlhe treatment of the above, subjects of instruction will be del, tailed in the scheme books, and tho time given to thorn will count as history or geography, as tho case' may require. • ■ 1
