Pre»s Association. Hokitika, June 21. William Martiu, aged 34, committed suicido at Goldsborough last night by shooting himself in the heafi. Wairoa, June 24. A man named George Gy wne Phillips was bushfelling at Mungapoiki when a tree split upwards and struck him in the small of the back causing a wound six inches long and three inches deep. It took 1(5 men 22 hours to carry him 12 miles, owing to the rough jcountry. Ho died in the hospital this morning. (The police have received information from Napier that Phillips is supposed to hare relatives in Mar ton.) Masterton, June 21, Mr Hugh Welch, a well known farmer, 35 years of age, was found drowned in the Ruamalmnga river yesterday morniug. The deceased "left his house at seven o'clock the same morning- and was seen a quarter of on hour later at the back of the farm. He was missed at breakfast and after a search the body was found in the river about 200 yards from his house. Deceased was at one time a prominent athlete ami Masterton "rep." footballer and was a member of the Masterton Agricultural Association. An inquest is being hold this afternoon. Napier, June 23.

Mr J. Close, for many years a member of the well-known firm of Neal ami Close and more recently the principal share holder of Neal and Close, Limited, died at his residence on Saturday. Mr Close, who through ill-health has not taken an active part in business for several years, was one of the most progressive bushiest men Napier has had, and although never taking a personal part in public affairc tie ha? always been one of the leading spirits in any step haying for its object the advancement of Napier. He has been in business here for upwards of 40 years.

One or two football players sustained injuries while -playing in the match Ahuriri against Pakipaki. H. Smith, one of the Ahuriri players, had his collarbone broken, and D. McCarthy, another member of the Ahuriri team, sustained interna) injuries, but whether of aserious character or not cannot at present be ascertained.
